Join the MADathon

The next time you see a group of youngsters break into a dance in a busy place, join in the fun.

Or, at least, try to find out the message behind the performance.

These are volunteers of AIESEC, a student-run organisation who form flash mobs at malls and other crowded places in the city to raise awareness about child rights.

They are now planning a marathon to help raise funds for the cause. Called MADathon (Make a Difference Marathon), this 10-km run for children and adults will take place on June 15 along the Marina Beach.

Led by S. Narayanan and supported by 15 members of AIESEC, all in their late teens, this group is campaigning to get as many people as possible to register for the run.

“There are four marathons happening in the city until June and like other organisers we too have a cause that we want people to sign up for,” says Narayanan, a second year BSc (Physics) student of Loyola College.

Last week, a flash mob ‘invaded’ Citi Centre, R.K. Salai.

There are plans to do the same at Express Avenue and Phonenix Market City.

“We received close to 20 registrations at Citi Centre. This apart, we are getting many online registrations,” says Narayanan, who is the organising committee controller of Project Footprint and Balakalakaar 2014 – both social initiatives of AIESEC that support less-privileged children.

Efforts are afoot to rope in corporates. Already, 50 employees from L&T have pledged support to the cause.

Fitness enthusiasts from TCS, Wipro and other firms have also promised support.

The funds collected from MADathon will help run projects of 35 city-based NGOs.
