It is over 20 years since Chandra Thiagarajan retired from the Integral Coach Factory, where she held the post of senior section officer (accounts). Last year, when she released her book of poems Poetic Musings, it did not come across as a surprise to her colleagues.

“I was called the ‘Poet Laureate of ICF’,” laughs 74-year-old Chandra. At a retirement function of a colleague, Chandra would be sure to present a poem about him/her.

“I must have read my poems at 15-16 retirement functions. A majority of them are acrostic,” says Chandra, a long-time resident of Villivakkam.

Chandra always loved poetry and prose. She was in the habit of penning down poetic lines during her free time. However, it was after her retirement that she took up poetry more seriously. Her family doctor C.V. Krishnan encouraged her to join the Chennai Poet Circle and that built her confidence.

“We meet every month at Ramakrishna Mission High School, T. Nagar, where we read our poems, listen to what others have to say and learn about new forms of poetry,” says Chandra who launched her book at one such meeting. It was a simple book launch attended by friends, family and well-wishers.

“My husband encouraged me to bring out the book and also find a publisher,” she says.

Chandra writes about a variety of subjects, almost anything that crosses her mind. She has a collection of over 350 poems that she has published on websites like and and magazines like Poets and Poetry World.

“I am thrilled to see my poems published and people criticising or appreciating them,” she says. Chandra wants to start a poets circle at Villivakkam. “Currently, I am the only person in the Circle from Villivakkam. If a few others join in, it will get interesting,” she says.

Chandra can be reached at 26176609.
