Lack of adequate bus services connecting Pammal, Pozhichalur and Anakaputhur to the parts of the city — especially T.Nagar, Vadapalani, Adyar, Perambur and Royapettah — is one of the downsides of living in these areas. Commuters are forced to go to Pallavaram to board buses to reach these destinations. .
“Commuting by buses from Pammal, Pozhichalur and Anakaputhur can be an ordeal. Except for M52 (Pozhichalur-Hastinapuram), (Pozhichalur-Guduvancherry), 60 (Anagapathur-Broadway), and 60 cut-service (Anagapathur-Saidapet), there are no bus services.
We have to board a minimum of three buses to go to areas such as Perambur, Valasaravakkam and Alwarpet,” says S. Rekha, a resident of Pammal.
“The Metropolitan Transport Corporation should take steps to introduce new bus routes connecting these areas to other parts of the city,” she says.
“Owing to poor connectivity of bus services, autorickshaw drivers take advantage of the situation and fleece the commuters. These autos mostly shuttle between Pallavaram, Pammal, Pozhichalur and Anakaputhur. It’s difficult to board the buses during rush hour, as they are overcrowded. School students, women and senior-citizens are the worst-affected,” says V. Subramanian, a resident of Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Anakaputhur.
“From Pammal, there are no direct bus services to Mylapore or Triplicane, so they must go to Pallvaram and board 21G and PP21 respectively. The problem is that the frequency of these buses is very poor. A few 21G services can be operated till Pammal and Pozhichalur. A lot of commuters will be benefitted if steps are taken to introduce shuttle services to Pammal, Pozhichalur and Anakaputhur,” K. S. Pattabhiraman, a resident of V.O.C. Nagar, Pammal, says.
MTC Officials say no requests have come from commuters for increasing the frequency of the existing bus services or for introducing shuttle services.
“If there are such requests, MTC will take steps to honour them ,” the officials added.
