On a Sunday morning, cold and pouring, the corridor at Avvai Primary School in Arunachalapuram, Adyar, was reverberating with dialogues rendered by tender voices. These lines were part of the script of a play by Koothabiran, fondly known as ‘Vannoli Anna’.

Over 60 children from different clubs had assembled at the school for a rehearsal. As organiser, Koothabiran was supervising it. The play, being organised by Chennai Vannoli Siruvar Sanga Peravai, will be staged on November 14 at P.S. Higher Secondary School, Mylapore. It will also be broadcast on All India Radio. The proceeds of the event will be donated to the Prime Minister’s relief fund for Jammu and Kashmir flood victims.

This year, the name of the production is Navarathnamaalai. As the name suggests, nine children’s troupes will perform on Children’s Day. Koothabiran says, “We can regard every child as a treasure of nine precious gems, if moral values are imbibed in them. There is another way of looking at it: There is no need to adorn ourselves with valuable ornaments if we have integrity and other moral values. ”

Koothabiran’s scripts promote compassion towards all beings, contentment, generosity, unity, forbearance and respect towards elders.

One of many principles Koothabiran follows in his theatre productions is that children should play the role of children and he also keeps his shows free of cosmetic make-up. To know more about the event, call 94442 19545 / 94980 04385

“We are also willing to perform all the nine plays in other schools. If any of them is interested, they can call us,” says Koothabiran.
