Eco centre in Mudichur soon

The Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI) is developing a first-of-its-kind environmental volunteer centre at Mudichur. The idea behind the centre is to create a one-stop for those interested in volunteering for environmental projects. Arun Krishnamoorthy, founder, EFI, says, “The project was in the pipeline for a long time. There isn’t a forum for environmental activities, a resource centre to ideate and execute environmental projects.”

The EFI Centre for Environmental Activities will also have a shelter for the injured, diseased and stray animals, says Arun. It will provide medical care facilities for the treatment of such animals. The centre will house an extensive urban terrace herbal garden aimed at restoring native Indian herbs. Vegetables and fruits will be raised on the garden and herbs will be grown as terrace garden, hanging garden and a terrestrial garden. The centre will act as a forum where environmental projects will be discussed and strategies developed for execution, he says.

“There would be a recycled hanging garden, where polythene bags and bottles will be recycled. These days, people generate more waste, so this garden would help reduce the trash going to landfills,” he adds. K. Chellasubramanian of Mudichur has donated his house for the centre.

The design and the plan is finalised and the work to reconstruct or remodel the house will begin soon. “The centre will become operational by the end of this month,” Arun points out. The centre will help students from schools and universities across the nation undergo a resident programme on result-oriented environmental conservation projects. “The main objective of the centre is to ensure active participation of all like-minded environmental enthusiasts,” he says.
