Adyar Downtown

An imported idea

When Anusha Ashok returned to India last year from the United States, she discovered that Chennai did not have enough libraries for toddlers. A mother of two who had filled her house with stacks of books, Anusha decided to start an online library called Little Spark.

“We visited a lot of libraries in the US for books for my daughter and we realised that there were a lot of unique books for children and each book we bought was hand-picked; there was no list we worked with,” Anusha says. She adds that Little Sparks’ mission is to spread the word on early reading, right from babies and toddlers.

A few weeks old, the Little Spark website is designed completely by Anusha. “I worked in IT for eight years and I’m hugely passionate about books,” she says. Anusha settled on an online library primarily for two reasons, lack of physical space and the fact that she had to devote most of her time to both her children.

The way Little Spark works is very simple. All you have to do is register yourself and select a subscription plan (with a refundable deposit of Rs. 1000), add the books you’d like to borrow to your wish list and Little Spark will home-deliver them.

They have three subscription plans you can choose from for either a month, three or six months. Little Spark offers 7 books per package and one delivery per month; if you want an extra delivery, it’ll cost you Rs. 100. Alternatively, you can also call Anusha who is more than happy to explain the whole process and is also open to coming home and displaying some of her collection (only to areas surrounding Adyar at the moment).

That’s not all. Little Spark also has puzzles and flash cards including sound puzzles as well (when you put together all the pieces in a puzzle, rhymes start playing). And there is also the option of gifting from Rs. 500 onwards

Anusha is also currently looking out for a space to display her collection of books. If you’re a resident of South Chennai and would like to gift your child the joy of books, contact Anusha on 9840910678 or >log onto Little Spark.
