Construction of care centre for those with special needs under way in Mannivakkam

The Good Life Centre (GLC) is constructing a residential care-cum-training centre for children and adults with special needs, at Mannivakkam.

According to GLC sources, support from like-minded individuals has made this project possible. Work on the centre started in 2012 and is expected to be completed in January 2017.

K. Baskaran, founder of GLC and a social worker, says, “The training centre will impart education to special children; it will have a physiotherapy unit, occupational therapy unit and a vocational training centre. The centre will also offer dance and music and yoga therapies for rehabilitation. At the vocational training centre, children will be taught how to make paper covers, wire bags, paper bags, chalk pieces, and candles. The income generated by selling these items will be credited into their bank accounts.”

The centre will also have a plastic moulding unit, where they will learn to make pen caps, ball point pens, medicine boxes, corrugated boxes and multipurpose utility boxes.

The centre will also accommodate senior citizens and have a treatment centre for those with multiple disabilities. The treatment will be offered free of cost.

“We are setting an organic vegetable garden at the terrace. The children will raise the garden and grow vegetables,” he adds.

“We hope to move to the centre by January 2017.”

Baskaran has rescued many people on the streets in and around Tambaram, rehabilitated them and re-united them with their families.

He has also rescued children of the mentally-challenged and of those who have have died due to AIDS or Tuberculosis.

Baskaran supports these children, sponsoring their education and meeting their other expenses.
