Hate Story 2

Hate Story 2

There’s hardly anything original about revenge stories. Surely nothing where the girl gets out of a coffin and makes a list of five people she wants to kill.

Hate Story 2 is actually Kill Mandar (played brilliantly by Sushant) or Mandar Ko Maar if you want to translate the idea behind Kill Bill literally.

Genre: Thriller
Director: Vishal Pandya
Cast:Surveen Chawla, Sushant Singh, Jay Bhanushal.
Storyline: A girl left for dead comes back for revenge.
Bottomline: Very well performed, delivers what it promises at quite a brisk pace.
While there is absolutely no ingenuity in the storytelling here, Hate Story 2 delivers exactly what the franchise promises — some skin, some sex, some kissing and some killing. It’s an erotic thriller that dispenses with permissible levels of erotica in the first half and settles into the revenge story in the second.

To its credit, it goes about its business pretty fast (screenplay by Madhuri Banerjee) and ends up to be a much better film than the first despite all the borrowing.

Because, it sticks to the basics. The script, however generic, is tight. Director Vishal Pandya gets the pacing right. And the performances hold it all together.

This film belongs to Surveen Chawla and she’s gone all out to prove she can act and shine through average material. Ditto with Sushant. As Mandar Mhatre, he makes this standard villain role rock with his dialogue delivery.

Mard ka bachcha hai toh akele aa, (If you’re the son of a real man, come alone)” says the hero (Jay Bhanushali seems to have learnt all his acting from Shah Rukh Khan’s films) when Mandar’s goons have overpowered him. And Mandar tells him coolly that he has no interest in proving he’s a mard ka bachcha.

This is an exploitation film that’s fully aware of what it is and never takes itself seriously. But given the quality of performances by the powerhouse heroine and the charismatic villain, it seems a little unfair to dismiss it as just another B-movie. Hate Story 2 is a little more than just that.
