Despite doing cameo roles in her first two Bollywood films “Paathshala” and “Wake up Sid”, hers is a face one would recognise almost instantly. Kainaz Motivala has made her debut as protagonist in Ekta Kapoor's “Ragini MMS,” releasing today.

“This is a horror-thriller film that is one of its kind, considering it all starts with a love story when my character, Ragini, is smitten by her boyfriend of a few months so much so she believes he's the ‘one' for her. They make a trip to a farmhouse where they get intimate and are caught on camera without their knowledge,” Kainaz informs, adding: “Ragini is just out of college and is a shy, vulnerable and naïve girl who lives in a Utopian world.”

It is different

Kainaz clears the air about the parallel that has been drawn between “Ragini MMS” and “Paranormal Activity”. “Both are horror-based but unlike in ‘Paranormal Activity' in which there's just a handycam, here there are 24 cameras capturing every move so much so there are times the audience are aware of what's happening but the characters in the film are unaware. This surely gives the film an edgy feel.”

It does seem that controversies surrounding this flick refuse to die down. “People who think the title implies this is a sex film or has nothing but a skin show will be disappointed because this is a hardcore concept that has been handled with tact and told beautifully.”But were there any inhibitions doing intimate scenes in her first lead role? “It took me some time to get into the skin of my character but when I read the script, the intimate scenes seemed befitting. They aren't frivolous and they haven't been included just for fame or publicity. Going by what the story revolves around, these scenes are a pivotal part of the plot.”

On working with the Queen Bee of the country's most popular household sagas, Ekta Kapoor, Kainaz says: “Working with Ekta has been fabulous. She's intelligent, confident and is extremely passionate about anything she believes in. It's been a privilege to have a producer like her for my movie.”

“Also considering ours is a male-dominated industry, it is only of late that women-oriented films are being made. I'm thrilled to be a part of this new trend.”

The one actor Kainaz hopes to work with soon is her idol Aamir Khan. “He's a star in every sense of the word. He is remembered for every role he's played in each of his films more than he's known as ‘Aamir Khan' and that's what is the benchmark of good acting,” she believes. Having been a part of romance and now a horror flick, the pretty damsel says she's ready to explore different genres of films as long as she's convinced she can do justice to the role.

Of her innings in Bollywood so far, she says: “Nobody ever knows enough. Every actor has scope for growth and my goal is to get better with every film, every scene, every take.” Kainaz is taking one step at a time. “I haven't signed on any project yet but talks are on and I'm thrilled I have great scripts coming my way.”
