Music highlights

‘Agila’, sung by Richard, is a flamenco salsa number, with congos and bongos providing the beat. Don’t miss the scatting, perhaps introduced for the first time in a Tamil song. ‘Pangaali Pangaali’ is a jazzy jugalbandi with vocals by Vijay Prakash, Holland Martin on the saxophone and south Indian rhythm instruments such as the thavil and tappu providing a lively beat. ‘Kaavalkaara’ is a typical Arab-style song, rendered by Nincy with a solo violin and darbukaa forming part of the accompaniment. ‘Yeppa’ is a South American-style song sung by Richard, with acoustic guitar, bongos and congos providing instrumental support. ‘Vellithirai’ sung by STR takes listeners back to those rock and roll songs heard in yesteryear Tamil movies. The song has rap and brass sections with old hits sung by a chorus.

What they say…

Producer S. Malathy: My husband Padmamagan has directed the film. He wanted to direct a socially relevant movie but I suggested that he stick to a theme that was entertaining rather than serious. That’s how he decided on the story of Netru Indru . As we did not want to waste time approaching producers, we decided to produce the film ourselves. We are happy with the outcome.

Director Padmamagan: I have directed three movies so far — Pallavan with Bharathiraja's son Manoj in the lead, the blockbuster Ammuvagiya Naan with Parthiepan as hero, and now, Netru Indru . Unlike most movies, Netru Indru does not have a hero or heroine. It’s a multi-starrer, with every actor playing a significant role. The screenplay is also different. Events of the past (Netru) and present (Indru) alternate throughout the movie. The ‘Netru’ events feature Prasanna, Richard, Bharani, Harish, Nithish, Balaji and Arundhathi, while Vemal and Nandhagi (Mano Chitra) bring to life the present-day events.

Music director Rehaan: My musical career as a keyboardist started after I completed a PhD from the University of Madras on the subject ‘Music in Tamil Cinema — its impact on society’. I started composing for the small screen and joined director K. Balachander’s team, scoring the music for many serials. I’ve done the RR for more than 50,000 episodes as well as title tracks which fetched me awards. Netru Indru is the first commercial feature film for which I’ve scored the music and I’m happy with the result.
