Winning awards came easy to Rituparno Ghosh but few have moved him the way the accolades won for his last film ‘Chitragandha’ did. Rituparno had also acted in the movie.
The film based on an LGBT relationship was considered path-breaking, but did not do too well at the box office. However, it won a special jury award at the 60 National Film Awards .
The writer Rituparno Ghosh was no less accomplished than the filmmaker Rituparno and he expressed himself eloquently and candidly on a range of issues in a weekly column that he wrote. In an emotional piece, he said in March this year that although his inbox was flooded with congratulatory SMSes, few had appreciated the movie ‘Chitrangadha’ and fewer still had seen it. “I urge all those who had turned their face away from the movie labelling it as ‘bad’.. they should not try to change their stand now that the movie has won an award.”
“I was the poster-boy of the Bengali film industry for a decade since my first released film ‘Unishe April’ .. I had an intense relationship with my viewers till ‘Chokher Bali’ .. and then things started changing as I started exploring same-sex relationships in my movies” he said.
In another piece, he narrated how his mother had landed up at the studios with all her gold jewellery as per his request. “ his was 20 years ago, I was a greenhorn then and Moonmoon Sen.. Moon-di to me, who hardly knew my mother then, just refused to allow my mother to use her jewellery saying that her mother, the legendary Suchitra Sen, had said that the harsh arc lights were harmful for the precious metal.”
The studio in question was the Tollygunj Technicians Studio.
Rituparno Ghosh body will reach there on his last journey this evening.
