‘Your fingers are too lovely for you to not be an artist’, a man told Anu on a flight recently. She sensed a pick-up line hidden in that genuine compliment. Only a girl who has grown up with boys around her can relate to another. We laughed at how naïve we had been and how protected our childhood was, thanks to all the male friends in our lives.
Anu’s infectious energy, her language, her attention to detail, her nature of understanding people and situations, and her global exposure make her very interesting to converse with. Her sense of humour in English mixed with Tamil makes it even more interesting.
Being a strong woman has its perks and disadvantages. She was talking about how important it is to stand by one’s conviction, even if it means losing an opportunity.
I had been admiring her right from her first film, Indira . She broke the stereotype. Her television shows were refreshingly intelligent. Recently, I worked with her on a campaign, and her professionalism taught me a lesson or two.
I recalled having seen her a couple of times in a restaurant that serves amazing filter coffee. When I asked her about it, her eyes lit up. “Post my television show, most people would ask me, ‘Aren’t you Anu from Coffee with Anu ?’” That’s when it clicked!
