Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan underwent surgery for a stomach ailment at a private hospital in suburban Mumbai on Saturday. His condition is stable and he is likely to be discharged on Sunday.
“It was a minor surgery, but lasted two to three hours. He is in the recovery room and his condition is stable. He is hale and hearty. He is talking. He has to rest it out. If all goes well, he will be discharged tomorrow [Sunday],” the actor's son, Abhishek Bachchan, told journalists at the hospital.
Asked about the nature of the ailment, Abhishek said: “Let me just say that it is a legacy of the past, in particular the accident he had in 1982 during [the shooting of the movie] Coolie .”
The Big B was admitted to the hospital in the early hours of Saturday. He was wheeled into the operation theatre at 9.30 a.m., Dr. Ashok Asthana, vice-president, operations, told a press conference.
“He came to the hospital with complaints of abdominal pain. He was examined and some tests were performed on him. It was found that a surgical intervention would relieve him of his pain. His vital parameters were normal,” Dr. Asthana said.
He said the actor's family was with him. The hospital refused to divulge details about the ailment or surgery citing confidentiality agreement.
A battery of media persons and several onlookers converged on the hospital. People from the neighbourhood displayed a placard carrying Mr. Bachchan's photo, which read ‘Get Well Soon!'
Abhishek later tweeted, “Thank you all for your wishes and prayers. The surgery went off well and dad is now in the room resting.”
