How it happened

I started off as a stage actor in comedies. My first stint in Tamil was for the television serial ‘Thanthira Bhoomi'. On television, I got recognition for my role in K. Balachander's ‘Anni'. I soon realised filmmakers offered me only soft roles. In my opinion, the most important characters in a film are its lead pair, followed by the villain. So, I tried various strategies to position myself as the bad guy. I got a break with Anjaneya and Jay Jay , but it was Arindhum Ariyamalum that established me as a credible actor. I hope my forthcoming Aata Naayagan , in which I play the second lead, takes me forward.

How it felt

I still remember the day I watched Jay Jay at the theatre — the audience burst into applause, and whistled at my parting dialogue. I experienced a surge of happiness as never before. I continue to experience that elation each time someone appreciates my work.

How life changed

There are things one ‘can' do and things one ‘wishes' to do. Acting is something I've always wanted to do. There's a sense of satisfaction at being able to make a living by doing what I enjoy. But then, life in show business is utterly chaotic, unpredictable and a roller-coaster ride. However, I quite enjoy the adventure it offers. I am just following a dream. It may sound scary, but at the end of the day, I'm taking the road less travelled, and waiting for the big change to happen.
