Grill Mill: Shankar Guru L. Raaja

You started as a director in Shankar Guru, and went on to give a number of hits in Tamil. But you never made it to the top.

I have never attached any significance to numbers. When I was busy doing films, I never thought about anything else. My first film itself had an AVM banner. In fact, I did nearly a dozen films in various languages. And, I was also fortunate to have done nearly half-a-dozen films with Arjun in the lead.

You worked for the small screen too.

I directed ‘Raguvamsam', a mega-serial for Kavithalaya, telecast on Sun TV. I also did ‘Himsaveda', a dance-drama without dialogues, for AVM, when I was just one film old. So far, I've done nearly 5,000 episodes in all the South Indian languages.

Nowadays you're busy with neither films nor the small screen.

That's because acting has taken up my time. It started with director Thirumurugan's Muniyaandi Vilangial Moondram Aandu. The films to be released include Parthepan's Vithagan, Stephan's Margazhi 16, Senapathimagan's Velluthu Kattu, Suresh's Vavval Kotai, ‘Jeyam' Raja's Thilalangadi and Thirumalai's Agam Puram.

What makes you happy — acting or direction?

Direction is satisfying, but acting makes you popular, and that brings happiness. While direction is tension-filled and requires responsibility, acting in character roles is relaxing.
