Grill Mill: Rajalakshmi

Where have you been all these years?

I got married in 1990 and went to Singapore. I stayed there for nearly 15 years. I came back to Chennai only in 2005 and opened my second innings in Telugu. I acted in the Tamil film Yaradi Nee Mohini, directed by Mithran R. Jawahar. I was happy when he approached me for a role in his latest film, Uthamaputhiran.

But it was not a big role and you didn't seem to have enough footage in the film.

When there are three or four families in a film, how do you expect a big role for an individual in it? Nowadays, we don't come across powerful mother roles. In those days, each and every character would be etched clearly and remembered for the way the artists portrayed them. It's sad noticeable roles are hard to come by for actors like me.

Do you find any difference in films, then and now?

But for technology, I don't find much of a difference. As for themes, family-oriented subjects were common then, now they are few and far between. Though we have made giant strides technologically, we need to put in a lot of hard work when it comes to choosing storylines. The focus these days remains only on the hero and the heroine. The significance of other characters in a story needs to be looked into.

Have you achieved what you wanted in the field?

No, not yet. I wish to do powerful roles that will display my talent.

Name your five best films ?

My first film Sankarabharanam (Telugu), Moondru Mugam (Tamil), Trishna (Malayalam), Uthamaputhiran (Tamil) and Kotteeswaran Magal (Tamil).
