Grill Mill: K. S. Selvaraj

K.S. Selvaraj.

Does it bother you that you've not reached the top spot as a cinematographer?

Not really. I was N.K. Viswanathan's (who directed ‘Jaganmohini') associate, and I've survived in the industry with 54 films — 18 for actor Arjun, and almost all the films by director Sundar C. I keep abreast of developments in the field, and try to implement them. That's the reason I'm busy even now, and the happiness it brings cannot match reaching the top spot.

You also tried your hand at acting.

Director Rama.Narayanan wanted Sathyaraj to play a villain in his film Vaaipandhal. As Sathyaraj was unable to do it, I was roped in for the role. I also played the lead in a Telugu film. I've have acted in 10 films so far.

Which do you prefer — acting or cinematography?

I have done both for Inaindhakaigal. Both are different in their own ways, but require total involvement. You can get a break in acting, but not in cinematography. I guess I like cinematography more for the satisfaction it brings.

Have you achieved what you wanted to?

Every day we learn something, and so our aim keeps changing too.

When a creative person feels he has achieved everything, that would be the end of his creativity. I'm trying to explore my creativity to its maximum, and I'm slowly getting there.
