Film remakes are a mixed blessing. On one side there’s a ready reference point to aid production, on another a scale on which it’ll continually be weighed. Especially, when the reference point is a film like “Jab We Met” — directed by a second-time director and with two lead actors who previously never sizzled in numerous screen appearances together, and which ultimately became the year’s biggest grossers that benefited everyone associated with it expectations are justified.
At a CD-signing session at Odyssey, Anna Nagar, recently the lead actors of “Jab We Met”’s Tamil remake, “Kanden Kadhalai”, Bharath and Tamannaah, and music director Vidyasagar spoke about the film’s audio.
“It was a real challenge as everyone knew the original film’s audio and its contribution to the success of the film,” said Vidyasagar. “Also, for the first time Suresh Wadker has rendered a song in Tamil,” he added.
“Kanden Kadhalai”’s audio has been released on Moser Baer and lyrics are by Na. Muthukumar, Yugabharathi and Kaargi.
While Bharath picked ‘Naan mozhi arindhaen’ as his favourite track, Tamannaah chose to go with ‘Oadodi poaraen’ (the Tamil version of Hindi’s ‘Yeh ishq hai’, the Kareena-starrer solo). “You can call it a little self-obsessed,” she added.
Speaking on the approach towards the film during shooting, Tamannaah added, “‘Jab We Met’ was a film where each scene was perfect. We didn’t want to spoil the fun. But then a few changes had to be made to render it suitable for the Tamil audience.”
Bharath, on the other hand, loved playing the corporate type. After the diplomatic ‘I-love-all-scenes’ route, Bharath conceded, “I loved the office scenes. I’ve never done such a classy role before.”
“Kanden Kadhalai” isn’t the only remake Tamannaah’s acting in. Next in line is a remake of Ravi Teja and Illeana’s Telugu film “Kick”. “Remakes are more difficult and an added responsibility, since remakes are obviously made of successful films,” she added.
Meanwhile, Bharath is looking forward to Suresh Krishna’s “Arumugam” and Badri’s “Thambikku Endha Ooru”.
