42nd IFFI to showcase technological revolution

There will be a special section for 3D stereoscopic and animation films

The 42nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) Goa, 2011, is all set to be inaugurated at Ravindra Bhavan in Margao, south Goa, on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

This year, the IFFI recognises technological breakthroughs by including a special section on 3D films and animation apart from premieres, international screenings, homages to stalwarts, industry-oriented workshops, masterclasses by industry professionals, and much more.

Screening 3D stereoscopic movies chosen not for their stereoscopic content but also for their excellence in handling the medium, the package will be a first of its kind across international film festivals and will aim to showcase the technological innovations films have made over the years.

Documentaries

Apart from the movie screenings, this festival will also see a section on documentaries which will bring in short-filmmakers along with a section of student films by young filmmakers from schools like the Film and Television Institute of India, the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute and the MGRFTI.

The Indian Panorama will be opened by the Malayalam film Urumi and will showcase eclectic Indian movies like Ranjana Ami Ar Asbo Na , Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara , Noong Amadi Yeroom , and many more.

The international competition will have the best of international cinema on Indian shores, featuring eclectic international movies such as Bullhead , Elana , Porfirio , Restoration , and Volcano , and will open with The Consul of Bordeaux by Portugese directors Francisco Manso and Joao Correa. The festival will close on November 3 with the screening of The Lady , by French director Luc Besson, which is based on Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

In the Retrospective section, which screens acclaimed movies of eminent personalities such as the legendary Luc Besson and Australian director Phil Noyce, will have Mr. Besson interacting with the audiences.

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan will be the chief guest; Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni and Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat will be present. Actor Suriya will add spice to the closing ceremony.
