“I haven’t done even a single film with a big hero or director since Kaadhal ,” begins composer Joshua Sridhar. He says he refused to grab every offer that came his way after the success of Kaadhal , especially of the song, ‘Unakkena Iruppen’. He made a comeback three years later with Kalloori , again pairing with director Balaji Sakthivel. “I tried moving over to Telugu and Kannada cinema, but again, couldn’t work with the big banners, with the stars,” he says. His big moment came when his debut Malayalam film, Keerthi Chakra , with Mohanlal in the lead, did very well musically.
Joshua almost rues that he isn’t great at marketing himself. “But it is just not who I am. That’s probably why I’ve only done 25 films in the last decade,” he says. Interestingly, he is not a trained musician. “I think there is a Karmic force that helps me come out with my tunes. That’s how I have survived in the industry,” he says.
Up next for him is Parandhu Sella Va and 54321 . “While Parandhu ... is a romantic entertainer, 54321 is a suspense thriller that has space for only two songs.” For the former, Joshua says that the director’s instruction was to come up with feel-good numbers. “I am confident that I can deliver hits regularly. In every album of mine, at least one song has turned out to be a hit.”
