What happens when Frodo Baggins and his team land in India? They go food hopping, papad munching and biryani hunting before the trio hit the turn table and brought the house down with their electronic house music. For the trio of Elijah Wood, Zach Cowie and DJ Fitz, hotel food is a complete no-no and Bappi Lahiri beats make them take to the dance floor with a hop in their stride.

Actor/producer Elijah Wood was in town to play at Playboy along with his team mates who are together better known as Wooden Wisdom or DJ Frodo.

How they met was a ‘I know-you you-him’ tale but Zach has a nice way of narrating it. “I knew Elijah for long and when I met Fitz he was more like my spiritual guru,” he laughs.

He says the interests were common and so playing music was the best thing they did when they got together. “Besides playing music we love to see and meet different people and try varied cuisines,” says Elijah who was sniffing and sneezing but insists it is not the weather or the pollution of the country.

Talking about their musical tour, the trio says that they cannot get enough of Asha Bhonsle’s pop numbers and the beats in which she makes people groove even now. The all-vinyl group says post their musical tour they will be back in Mumbai hunting for more vinyls to carry back. “Mohammed Rafi has some brilliant tracks and we love listening to him. Besides movie songs Indian classical music has a great character. The sitar, the tabla — they are great musical instruments.”

What makes Elijah Wood and his team different from the concept of celebrity DJs is that they can navigate a broad range of sounds that range from acid rock to African funk and can get a crowd going with their music alone.

Music apart, the musicians are flabbergasted to read some ‘facts’ about themselves in Indian newspapers, which they are not aware themselves. Says an amused Elijah, “The one that I remember most is that we’ve supposed to have enjoyed Bengali cuisine. I wonder when. But now that we are ‘supposed’ to like it, I can’t wait to try some. Besides India has opened our palate to a variety of flavours. We have absolutely gone ga-ga over papadams and want to grab more of that before we fly out of Hyderabad,” says Elijah.

Zach says India has been on their minds for long and glad it happened. The three say, the fan base is huge and the promotions and visits have left them exhausted. “We gave away a car key to a lucky customer. But when the key came it was quite a huge one,” says Elijah with a bemused look. He adds, “But once we wrap up, it’s going to be the tourist mode and we are going to take in as much of India we can from Bombay.”

What Indian music track crosses their mind most often, Jeena mujko seekha de...la la la, says Elijah.
