Social issues, human emotions, crime and justice — Kartik Fine Arts’ Kodai Nataka Vizha has them all

If it is summer, it should be Kodai Nataka Vizha. Kartik Fine Arts’s theatre festival opens tomorrow at the Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai. The 12-day event (April 22-May 3, 7 p.m.) will witness as many troupes inaugurate their plays, which will vie for awards, to be given away on June 1.

The festival opens with Sathyasai Creations’ ‘Manidhan Enbavan,’ the troupe’s fifteenth production. Written by Ezhichur Aravindan and directed by Raji Ganesh, it is about a man with a golden heart.

It is golden jubilee for Stage Creations and 60th year in theatre for Kathadi Ramamurthi. What is ‘Ninaippadhellam Nadandhu Vittaal...’ about? “Come and see for yourself says the crew, which does not want to reveal the plot.

‘Visaranam’ of Legally Yours is a crime story, naturally. Four situations, in fact, where the accused exploit the loop holes in the law. In walks an investigating officer, who matches them in wit and restores justice.

Suspense element

‘En Uyirinum Maelana,’ Sadatcharam Theatres’ tribute to the armed forces, is a suspense thriller with the focus on infiltration and corruption. Story and dialogue are by Vittal Narayanan. E.M.S. Murali is the director.

Women’s right vs. chauvinism is the theme of D. Mallikraj’s story. Heroine Ramya’s world is disturbed by the attempts of Dinesh to curtail her freedom. Srilakshmi has directed and produced Ajay Entertainers’ ‘Katrukkenna Vaeli.’

Veteran T.V. Radhakrishnan comes up with ‘Iraivan Kodutha Varam’ for Sowmya. A family drama, it has as its characters an old couple leading a contented life, their sons and a daughter. TVR handles story, dialogue and direction.

Mayurapriya presents ‘Vivahamalai.com,’ which as the title suggests, is about a matrimony site. P. Muthukumaran (story-dialogue-direction) promises to project an ideal website, the dream of parents.

Dummies Drama dedicates ‘Yaarukkum Vetkamillai (story-dialogue-direction by Sreevathson) to Cho, who authored a play of the same title. A chess player’s mental trauma is the subject of Koothapiran Navabharat Theatres’ ‘Chaduranga Paarvai,’ written and directed by N. Rathnam. Incidentally, the troupe had a successful outing last year with their ‘Kaleeswara Bhavanam’ winning awards.

Man cannot live like an island — S. Gowrisankar’s ‘Samudra’ for Gurukulam Original Boys Co ‘95 underlines this, spun around people, who live in an apartment.

Kovai Anuradha is back as writer after a hiatus with ‘Unnai Arindhal.’ Protagonist Pattabhi chases a mirage called celluloid, not bothering to assess his strengths and weaknesses. Goodwill Stage’s play is directed and produced by Kovai Padhu. Kalaivani offers ‘Uravodu Vilaiyadu,’ a triangular relationship involving two women and a man. Rajaram has directed the play for which Poovai Mani has written the story and dialogue.
