Young vocalists paid tribute to Nookala on his 94th Jayanti

A two-day music festival in honour of Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana was organised by Vishwakala Parishat, an organisation started by Nookala in 1983 with an intention to encourage and promote young musicians. The festival was held at Saptaparni last weekend.

Dharmala Lalitha Haripriya

Dharmala Lalitha Haripriya, a disciple of Hyderabad sisters, gave a concert on the first day, accompanied by Oruganti Rajashekhar (violin) and Dharmala Ramamurthy (mridangam). She started her concert with a brisk rendition of Sitamma Mayamma of Tyagaraja in Vasantha ragam set to Rupaka talam and followed it with Nookala’s composition Srinivasa Varadayaka , in Natakuranji, Adi talam. She then went for another composition of Tyagaraja Marivere Dikkevvarayya Rama in the Shanmukhapriya, treating it as main item of the concert. A detailed rendition of Shanmukhapriya ragam established her flair in gamaka presentation. Later she rendered Mahadeva Siva Sambho in Revathi and concluded it with a tillana composed by Lalgudi in Yaman.

Ramya Kiranmayi

The main concert of the evening was that of Ramya Kiranmayi, grand-daughter and disciple of legendary guru the late Ivaturi Vijayeshwara Rao of Vizag. She is blessed with mellifluous voice with good range. The concert highlights were Pahimam Sri Rajarajeshwari in Janaranjani of Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer. The next number was Maara Janani in Natakapriya of N Ch Krishnamacharyulu. She presented ragalapana and swarakalpana, both manodharma efforts contingent of her creative skills. She also presented swarakalpana in the same measure of quality.

Ninnadanela in Kannada ragam of Tyagaraja and Sudhamayi in Amritavarshini, Rupaka talam of Muthaiah Bhagavatar kriti with brisk ragalapana were the numbers she rendered before she went for the main composition of her concert Nanupalimpa in Mohana of Tyagaraja. It was decorated with all the important creative spells ragalapana, neraval and swarakalpana. Ramya concluded her concert with Nandanandana of Lalitha Dasar in Hindusthani raga Dash.

Sowmya Lakshmi

Sangeetha Ksheerasagaram organised a Carnatic vocal recital of Sowmya Lakshmi Srinivasan, presently a resident of Dubai, at Saptaparni last week. She was in the company of N C Ananthakrishna on violin and Palivela Vidyasagar on mridangam.

Born into a traditional family of musicians this 15-year-old first learnt from her parentsand has been under the tutelage of legendary vocalist Tyagaraja n from the age of 20 . Sowmya opened her concert with Sri Mahaganapathe of Mayuram Viswanadha Sastri in Nata set in Adi talam and followed it with Dasaradha Nandana of Tyagaraja in Asaveri. Then she rendered Narada Ganalola in Athana, also of Tyagaraja, introducing it with a brief ragalapana. This was followed by sub-main number Ninne Nera Namminanu of Tyagaraja in Panthuvarali. This was opened with detailed alapana, unveiling the intricate moves of the raga. After an impressive neraval at ‘Veda Sastra Puraanaadi’ path was laid for a fine kalpanaswaras in two speeds, that spoke of her creative skills. When rendering Sogasuga Mridanga Talamu of Tyagaraja in Sriranjani in Roopaka talam the graceful contour of the raga was gradually evolved. Swarakalpana with the pallavi Sogasuga was done with fluency and command. The brisk number Maakelara Vicharamu of Tyagaraja in Ravichandrika, Adi talam in was a simple kriti rendition. Brochevaarevarura in Khamas of Mysore Vasudevachar was taken up later and was sung with apt sahitya expression. After the rendition of Paramapurusha Jagadeeshwara in Vasantha of Swathi Tirunal, she went for the main number of the concert Maa Janaki Chetabattaga of Tyagaraja in Kambhoji, Adi talam. Her alapana of the raga was brilliant and the rendition of the kriti filled with sahitya bhava. She presented nereval at Vanimatalaku Kopamochi and followed it with kalapanaswaras that revealed her rich manodharma. An impressive tani avartnam by Vidyasagar was an added attraction.
