SS Bharathi organised a veena concert of Srivani last week at DD Colony to pay tribute to late S Balachandar. She was accompanied by Srinivasa Gopalan on mridangam and Sridharachari on ghatam. The function was attended by noted veena artiste Shyamasundaram.

Srivani opened her concert with Navaragamalika varnam and played with steady pace bringing out the raga bhava of each of the melodies. She then presented raga Naata for Swathi Tirunal’s composition Swaminatha Paripalaya Sumam in adi talam. She gave the raga picture packing it with sangatis. The swarakalpana part too was quite engaging.

She then played a rare composition of Muthaiah Bhagavatar Pasupathi kriya- Sharavana bhava in Adi talam. It was loaded with intricate chitta swaras.

Later Srivani chose to present Simhendra madhyam for Ninne Namminanura in misra chapu talam. This was the major attraction of the concert. The raga essay was in great detail, trekking through impressive nuances of the ragam.

Srinivas Gopalan’s expert play on mridangam enhanced the appeal of the number, elevating aesthetic levels of the concert.

Srivani concluded her recital with Lalgudi’s tillana in Desh and a small song Tamburi Meetedava in Sindhubhairavi of Purandara dasa.
