Singer Sruthy Sasidharan makes her Bollywood début with Arijit Singh for a Punjabi track in Commando 3

Sruthy Sasidharan has just realised a “dream”. The Kochi-based singer’s soothing voice has seen her croon for projects in many a language within a short span of time. The 26-year-old has now made her début in Bollywood as well with the romantic melody ‘Akhiyaan milavanga’ alongside Arijit Singh for the upcoming flick Commando 3.

Sruthy says Bollywood composer Mannan Shaah requested her to send him a sample track of the song a few months ago. “But he did not reveal anything more about the project. He was happy with the recording and later asked me to sing the same track in a different pitch, and added that Arijit would be part of the song. It was only after Arijit sang his portions that I came to know that it was a Bollywood project. The feeling was overwhelming,” she says over phone.

The audio jukebox for Commando 3 was released last week, while the music video for ‘Akhiyaan milavanga’ came out on Thursday. ‘Akhiyaan milavanga’, written by lyricist Sahil Sultanpuri, is in Punjabi and Sruthy says she did not really face any hiccups with getting the accent correct. The rapport she shares with Mannan Shaah helped her in perfecting the accent.

“He was constantly providing instructions in order to perfect the song. In fact, he used some of his Punjabi friends as a sounding board. I was later told that none of them could identify that a Malayali had sung the number,” says Sruthy with a laugh.

Sruthy became acquainted with Mannan Shaah when the composer contacted her after listening to one of her songs over a year ago. Having recorded her portions in ‘Akhiyaan milavanga’ at a studio in Kochi, she’s now thrilled to meet Arijit in person as part of the movie promotion.

Sruthy says she had earlier kept the “big news” of her Bollywood début under wraps from her family and friends. “Perhaps, it was just me and my recording engineer who knew about this here. It was only on the eve of the jukebox release that I broke the news to my parents and fiancé because since it’s a huge opportunity, I wanted to be 100% certain and waited till the last minute,” she says with a chuckle.

An engineering graduate, Sruthy quit her IT job to pursue a career in music and her repertoire now includes works in seven languages — Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, Hindi and Assamese. Her most recent Mollywood song was ‘Ivide naam’ from Ennodu Para I Love You Ennu. Commando 3 is slated to release later this month.
