It’s all about dynamics

The bands, Haiku-Like Imagination and Space Is All We Have, will keep your foot tapping this weekend

When you’ve got songs like ‘Hey, Dynamics’ or ‘Peach of the Seven Skies’, it might seem like you are just fishing for attention. But city-based band, Haiku-Like Imagination (who would draw enough attention for their name alone), say there is real meaning behind their titles.

“Most songs are legitimate translations of how we experience things. For instance, this song called “Sine” has a breakdown which has a pattern that is sinusoidal in nature. That is because it reflects our understanding of life in all of its entirety. What goes up, comes down. Like a sinusoid. Or “Hey, Dynamics” for that matter, greets the dynamics that life provides and is reciprocated in the way the song moves,” the band says.

Understandably, the music revels in guitar melodies, twinkling as much as they crunch down from time to time, in odd-metered rhythmic patterns. What started out as a studio project by guitarist Sucheth Ramprasad and their former vocalist Siddharth Sriram last year now includes drummer Aniketh Ashok, guitarist Soorya Praveen, bassist Abheet Anand and vocalist Siddharth Nair. The band adds, “We had our first couple of shows at Octavium Music Academy and Malanad Calling ‘17. It has been three months since the line-up has felt complete but we are also collaborating with Shiyasz Abdul, the vocalist of Space Is All We Have for clean vocals.”

Drawing from prog rock, post-hardcore, Math rock and more, Haiku-Like Imagination like being as non-linear as possible in arrangement. Guitarist Sucheth mentions “cathartic entropy” as a way of gaining space for expression and though in music. “Simply because there is no emphasis on a particular structure or a set of rules,” he says.

With the first few shows in the city out of their way only months ago – including a set at gig series Unscene earlier this month – the band is gearing up to perform at Bflat on October 27 alongside space/ambient rock band Space Is All We Have, and a (possibly) one-off acoustic set at living room gig series Sofar.

The musicians says it has not exactly been easy or difficult setting up gigs just yet and add, ““Our priority right now is just being able to show the people around us the music we make. It might get harder or easier in a few months but we are in for the long haul!” Adding to that are plans for a debut album early next year, and even a double-sided concept EP. “The band also wants to move forward keeping in mind that the entire performance needs to be like an act or a play that people come to experience, so we are working on visuals for our live set that we take everywhere we play. The art that we push out is going to complement the same sort of musical and visual aesthetic. It is an exciting time to be alive!”

Haiku-Like Imagination, Space Is All We Have will perform at Bflat on October 27, 9 pm onwards. Entry: ₹500, tickets available on Insider.in
