Carnatic musician Pantula Rama was on Friday conferred with the Indira Sivasailam Endowment Medal at a function organised by the Indira Sivasailam Foundation at The Music Academy, for her contribution to the art field.

Three accompanying artistes were also honoured with the 10th Anniversary Special Award for their exceptional performance. N. Murali, president, The Music Academy, said the Indira Sivasailam Endowment Fund was a fitting tribute to the connoisseur and patron of classical music, as it recognised outstanding senior musicians for their excellence. He also spoke about Indira Sivasailam’s interests in Indian traditions and culture and her long-standing association with the Music Academy.

Lauding the award recipient, he said Pantula Rama was a multifaceted personality and a child prodigy. All musicians awarded were from awe-inspiring music lineages, he added.

Mallika Srinivasan, chairman and chief executive officer, TAFE, who founded the Indira Sivasailam Foundation in memory of her mother a decade ago, said the foundation was dedicated to promoting classical arts and rich traditions of south India among the younger generation. This was done as a tribute to Indira Sivasailam, who was passionate about music and cherished Indian culture. This year, nearly 100 aspiring musicians from across the country were chosen for the Anwesha Balavidhwan contest to nurture young talent.

Accepting the award and citation, Ms. Pantula Rama said it was special to her for multiple reasons, including the institution of the endowment medal in loving tribute to a mother, and the criteria of choosing awardees, as it reinforced the essence of her contributions to carnatic music. The other awardees were morsing artiste Bhagyalakshmi M. Krishna, violinist R.K. Shiramkumar and mridangam artiste J. Vaidyanathan.
