On his 42nd death anniversary, remembering Elvis Presley, who rocked the world

On August 16, 1977, the world lost a music legend — Elvis Presley at the young age of 42. Every party I went to, we would be jiving to the tunes of ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ with the dance floor filled with couples swinging around, making it a wondrous sight to behold. Presley wasn’t just the ‘King of Rock N’ Roll,’ he was the king of good times too.

Born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935, embarked on a career as a musician after moving to Memphis. In January 1956, he released his first single ‘Heartbreak Hotel,’ which went on to become the number 1 hit in the U.S. From there on his popularity only kept growing making him the best-selling solo artiste in recorded music. He even made his acting debut in ‘Love Me Tender.’

Known for his incandescent good looks, sensual dance moves, powerfully wide vocal range and flamboyant clothing and attitude, Presley was greeted by hysterical fans wherever he went.

He made Rock N’ Roll a global phenomenon, so much so that parties across the world were unthinkable without his music. But life for him was not all song and dance. On the contrary, it was quite tumultuous.

Presley’s death came as a sad end to his rock stardom — he was found lying face down in his bathroom. First ruled as a cardiac arrest, it was later said he had succumbed to drug overdose.

After reaching dizzying heights as a singer, he entered Hollywood hoping to make it big as an actor too. But that didn’t happen. On the music front, barring a few hits, ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’ in 1961 and ‘Crying In The Chapel’ in 1965, his career began to plummet..

In 1968, he made a ‘comeback special’ in an effort to revive his career. The show was telecast live across America and was perhaps the only good happening to him during that time. Of course, in 1967 he married his long-time sweetheart Priscilla Beaulieu and they had a daughter, Lisa Marie, in 1968. However, in 1973 they filed for a divorce.

Presley gradually began to lose hold on his music and life. His fall from fame was hard and fast.

But four decades after his death, we still can’t help falling in love with his voice and his irresistible charisma.

He is ‘Always on our mind.’
