Singers Smita and Nihal team up with Threeory for a unique spiritual fusion event

Singer Smita’s best is always preserved for the Shivaratri season but she insists it’s not on purpose. Most of the singer’s recent musicals, be it her album Ishana or her singles on Nirvana Satakam, or Shiva chanting the previous year were all out during the festival, because of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s teachings on Shiva have impacted her deeply. This year on February 24, a Gudi Sambaralu event will see her and singer Nihal team up with city fusion band Threeory for a series of spiritual fusion numbers.

“As an audience, I would ideally want people to experiment with styles and take a relook at devotional tracks. They can be recreated without losing the essence,” she says, acknowledging that Threeory’s unique style made this collaboration happen. “No band does spiritual fusion but working with a group that has strong coordination is always a welcome move,” adds Smita referring to common ground between her style and theirs. “Devotion is a powerful element to reach out to people; we believe this opportunity would open a lot of doors in future too,” adds Mark Talur, a keyboard player from Threeory. Both look forward to interesting tie-ups in the coming months.

Nihal is another singer to watch out for at the event, given his strong classical roots, his impressive work in promoting Indian classical music in Mauritius over the years. “He brings a lot of strength and assurance to what I sing and ensures we are not diverted from our core,” says Smita. Returning to live singing after a sabbatical, she says, “The gap was needed, I had to switch off from what I had done in the past and rediscover myself. This is also the first time I am performing live with spiritual compositions. The performance venue holds sweet memories of my grandma too. There are many good things that are coming together for this,” she signs off.
