Dancing to your tune

This weekend, attend a party where everyone gets to gyrate to their own choice of music

Looking for a club to dance away the night can be pretty hard, especially if your friends like music genres that are poles apart. For the timid, these joints can get especially loud and flustering too. However, Sanchit Gupta and and Sahil Kapoor’s parties aren’t noisy affairs. Walk into their secret party today and you’ll be greeted by the sight of bodies gyrating silently, donning a set of headphones flashing red, blue or green lights.

The concept of silent discos, where music is broadcast through radio transmitters to wireless headphones instead of through a speaker system, has been around for a while. The earliest reference to silent discos was made in the 1969 Finnish sci-fi film Ruusujen Aika (A Time of Roses), in which people wore headphones and danced silently at a party. The concept resurfaced in the early 1990s when eco-activists decided to host silent parties to reduce noise pollution.

Gupta, the co-founder of DrinksOnMe, an app that keeps you up to date with events in the city, encountered a silent party while he was studying in Paris a couple of years ago. “It was such an interesting concept; it was so fresh and fun. A few years later, I saw the same parties happening in Goa as well and wondered why there were none in the other metropolitan cities,” recounts Gupta. The idea fit right in as a part of DrinksOnMe’s live events programming, which previously included the Secret Rooftop Party in May and the Secret Road Trip.

More importantly, the silent party concept helps organisers exceed the strict 10 p.m. deadline on music at open-air venues. “It helps us reclaim those beautiful spaces and rejuvenates the idea of the same, regular party,” Gupta explains. The event property was introduced in the capital first, with DrinksOnMe holding the first two editions of their Secret Headphone Party at The Groghead and Informal in New Delhi, and saw a great turnout, prompting them to introduce it to Mumbai’s nightlife.

With the secret venue set to be announced today, the Secret Headphone Party is a draw for friends who have varied tastes in music but want to party together. With three buttons to change channels, you can choose between hip-hop and bass music, psy trance and chill step, or commercial and deep house music. Six DJs will play during the night in two shifts of three DJs playing at the same time. On the line-up for the night are DJ Ray and One&One playing commercial and techno music, Psyclipse and The Astrays pumping out psy trance and music with tropical influences, and DJ Vren and Sonicvision adding hip-hop to the mix. Rest assured, this isn’t going to be like any other party you’ve been to.
