Actor Karan hasn’t watched Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam yet. But memes involving him and the recently-released film are flooding social media. A background track from one of Karan’s films — ‘Shroov’ — has also been doing the rounds on social media.
“This sudden craze was unexpected... but what else does an actor need?,” asks Karan, in a quick telephonic chat, “Many friends have been calling me to say that I have become viral. I started getting these memes a week ago.” He has not watched the Mani Ratnam film yet and does not get the many references fans are making, but is more than happy that he’s in the news. “I plan to watch the film this week for sure.”
Karan’s last film was the 2016-starrer Uchathula Shiva. He has since then taken a backseat from films voluntarily. “I am stubborn about acting only in scripts that suit me. I have been lying low for the past three years, scouting for nice subjects,” he adds.
Currently, the actor is in talks for a major film. “I’ve finished only 13 films in nine years. If I wanted, I could have crossed 25 films, but I was not after milestones. These days, Tamil cinema is taking up varied subjects but I prefer taking my time to choose the right project.”
Karan fondly recalls the track ‘Shroov’, which has become viral now. “It was composer Vidyasagar’s tune for Coimbatore Mappillai . I remember watching the film at a preview theatre, and many people appreciated the ‘Shroov’ phrase even back then. But I had no clue that it would become popular now. Everywhere I go, people keep saying, ‘Shroov Shroov’.”
