‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ trailer watch: Anupam Kher, Akshaye Khanna build intrigue

The Accidental Prime Minister, a biographical drama about the life and political career of former Prime Minister and Congress leader Dr. Manmohan Singh, is based on the 2014 memoir ‘The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh’ by Sanjay Baru. Mr. Baru, a political analyst, had served as the media adviser to Mr. Singh.

The trailer for the film, which was released late on Thursday, showcases veteran actor Anupam Kher as Manmohan Singh and Akshaye Khanna as narrator Sanjay Baru. The 3-minute long trailer starts with Mr. Khanna comparing Mr. Singh to Bhishma of Mahabarat, caught in the middle of a family drama. It goes on to provide a dramatised telling of key moments of Mr. Singh's tenure as the PM, focusing on a tug-of-war between him and then-Congress president Sonia Gandhi as detailed by Mr. Baru.

Anupam Kher's portrayal of Mr. Singh has been much appreciated. The actor has said that this is the best role of his career. German-born actor Suzanne Bernert plays Sonia Gandhi, while Arjun Mathur and Aahana Kumra play Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra respectively.

The trailer has also whipped up controversy within hours of release. Congress raised objections to the “incorrect presentation of the facts” while the Bharatiya Janata Party took to Twitter to share the trailer with the message: "Riveting tale of how a family held the country to ransom for 10 long years. Was Dr Singh just a regent who was holding on to the PM’s chair till the time heir was ready? Watch the official trailer of #TheAccidentalPrimeMinister, based on an insider’s account, releasing on 11 Jan!"

How loyal the film is to the book remains to be seen, but if the trailer is anything to go by, it promises to pack quite a punch and ruffle a few feathers.
