In the long run: Shreyas Talpade

Shreyas Talpade is the latest to enter the web series space with Baby Come Naa , an AltBalaji original, where he is playing a manipulative young man trying to woo two girls. Known for his comic timing and realistic approach to acting, Shreyas has somehow lost his way in the last few years. “AltBalaji is giving good content such as Bose.Baby Come Naa is based on one of my friend's play called Double Trouble. It is a total entertainer with a lot of pun-filled comedy. I am playing a guy who is trying to manipulate two girls. I have never played a role like this,” he reasons.

Shreyas says writing is the most important part of storytelling in films. “A good writing differentiates between an 'on-the-face' kind of situation and real humour. The show has been written very well, taking into consideration minute details. It is because of writing that you enjoy doing films like the Golmaal franchise.”

On his absence from the scene, Shreyas reminds that he did Poster Boys . “I have become a little selective these days. I have done some things for my friends which for some reasons did not work out. Now, I want to be sure that whatever I do, I am satisfied doing it. I enjoy a certain creative process at work and if I am not happy doing something, I should rather wait. It is showing results and you will see quite a bit of me in the coming year.”

Shreyas, who made his debut with the much-acclaimed Iqbal , feels that if you have to score a century, you have to show patience. “You have to be open to change and have to reinvent with the changing times. Iqbal was a film which questioned the archetypal understanding of the hero in the Hindi film industry. Naseer Sahab gave me confidence in understanding that looks are not really that important and your art and craft will speak for you in the long run. If you are honest about your work, people will see beyond your looks, your dedication to acting.”

He feels the idea of a film hero has changed in the last decade. “If you ask me, a majority of us now play characters on screen. Akshay Kumar can beat hundreds in Rowdy Rathore , but not in a social film like Padman . Both are successful, both can coexist.”

These days, Shreyas is deeply involved with Marathi cinema, which has seen a surge in the last few years. “Marathi cinema is very important since the beginning of cinema movement in India. The defining feature of regional cinema is its connection with the regular commercial cinema audience, especially youth. If it continues to cater them, it will boom. For regional cinema to thrive, State support is important, which Marathi cinema is getting. The producer knows even if there is any loss, he is not going to face many hardships.”
