Another week, another film in which G.V. Prakash plays a loser. From playing the frustrated loser in Trisha Illana Nayanthara , Bruce Lee and Kadavul Irukaan Kumaru, to the more likeable, less irritating kind in Naachiyaar , one assumed that he had covered all the bases of playing a loser. But no, he’s back again with Semma .
- Genre: Comedy
- Director: Vallikanth
- Cast: GV Prakash, Yogi Babu, Arthana Binu
- Storyline: A couple tries to stay married without the knowledge of the girl’s father
Call it an acquired taste or the body’s immune system kicking in, but Prakash has finally managed to look relaxed and comfortable on screen. And that goes a long way in making Semma , a frivolous comedy, watchable.
It also helps that he’s backed by a team of supporting actors that includes Kovai Sarala, Mansoor Ali Khan and Yogi Babu, who are all in good form.
The film’s about Kulandai (G.V. Prakash) who gets married to Magizhini (Arthana Binu) without the permission or knowledge of her father. The couple decide to wait till they have a child to tell the father, thinking of ridiculous and at times funny tricks to keep him away.
Despite the odd jokes and the good performances, what’s lacking is any kind of conflict or drama. Scenes play out like comedy sketches, with one making way for another. And when there’s nothing at stake in terms of drama, nothing really seems to matter.
But given that it’s a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously, these flaws become passable and the film, less intolerable.
