The Departed
Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award-winning film brings out the best in the ensemble cast. The Hollywood remake of Hong Kong film Internal Affairs proves to be one of the best crime dramas ever made, with its gripping narrative. It narrates the story of two men infiltrating opposite sides of the law.
The Silence Of The Lambs
A thriller in a league of its own. Anthony Hopkin’s phenomenal portrayal of the cold and cannibalistic Hannibal Lecter goes perfectly with the riveting storyline.
Amour
The brutal yet beautiful depiction of the hardships of an octogenarian couple as one of them suffers a stroke. It torments the viewer long after watching the movie.
Mathilukal
Adoor Gopalakrishan elegantly portrays the unlikely romance between an author, jailed for treason by the British, and a woman in the neighbouring prison. The two are separated by a high wall and cannot see each other. The fact that the female protagonist is never shown adds to the enigma and richness of the script, which is an adaptation of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer’s famous work.
I, Daniel Blake
The 2016 Palme d'Or winner from Cannes Film Festival is an exceptional critique of the austerity measures in Britain. It pulls no punches while shedding light on the true colours of neo-liberal economic policies and privatisation and what it does to the common man.
