Monali Thakur does not like the term ‘playback singer’, she prefers to be called a recording artiste. “I think it describes our work profile better,” says the young singer, who has just released a single ‘Tamanna’ on her YouTube Channel alongwith a beautifully shot video.
For those who are big on Bollywood music, she is the voice behind the superhit ‘Moh moh ke dhaage’ from the film Dum Laga Ke Haisha that fetched her a National Award and several other awards. “I am fortunate to have got an opportunity to sing such a lovely composition. These are songs that keep you alive in the listeners’mind,” says Monali, who comes from a musically inclined family from Kolkata. “My parents always thought my elder sister would become a professional singer but she did not. Seeing her and others in the family sing, I decided to pursue music. And here I am, hopping from one studio to another,” laughs Monali.
Despite a slew of songs for films coming her way, Monali had been keen to get into the Independent music scene. “To find one’s own creative space is exciting and so is experimenting with genres. I am delighted that the indie space has seen a phenomenal growth in the past few years, with Indian singers even going global.”
Tamanna is a peppy song, with a tinge of Western influence. A fashion enthusiast, Monali reveals this side of her persona in the video with her bold looks.
Says the singer, “Tamanna is a contemporary piece, written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, produced by Bert Elliot and composed by me. The song is a literal representation of the way I see my life — filled with love, energy and happiness. I hope people identify with my ‘tamanna’ (aspiration).”
Monali wants to enjoy the best of both — singer and composer. “That will be really striking the high note,” she quips.
