“All these days you’ve made so many dosas. Has anyone ever made a single dosa for you,” came the question in the teaser that was released a couple of months ago for director Bramma’s second film Magalir Mattum.
The teaser’s follow-up doesn’t disappoint. If the simple arithmetic of counting how many dosas a woman has made in her lifetime was endearing, the trailer for the film, released on Sunday, is even more so.
The trailer opens with three young women (teenagers?) arguing about seeing a film — who we presume are the younger versions of Bhanupriya, Urvashi and Saranya Ponvannan’s characters. “ Sevuru eri gudhicha dhan padam. Illena pappadam dhan ! (Movie only if you jump over the wall. Else, only pappadams!)
The trailer seems to suggest that these women have gone their separate ways since. They now have families — husbands, kids, in-laws etc. So what happens when these women, who look like they’ve been bogged down by said responsibilites, leave all of them behind for barely 72 hours?
We get a road trip, and some dosa-related mathematics, of course — or so the trailer tells us.
Jyothika, in her second film after 36 Vayadhinile, plays the role of a journalist/documentary filmmaker who takes the three apparently beleaguered women on the road trip.
Interestingly, the film features Nasser as one of the husbands, who played the villain in the 1994 Magalir Mattum — the film from which the 2017 flick borrows its title . Urvashi, too, played one of the three working women in the 1994 film. However, her character is the breadwinner of the family, while her husband stays at home and takes care of their child after having lost his job.
The film also stars Livingston and Suriya in a guest appearance.
Magalir Mattum is a home production for Jyothika — it is produced by actor Suriya’s 2D Entertainment. With music by Ghibran, the film is scheduled for release in May.
