Sudhakar Komakula’s comeback

Take two Sudhakar hopes to make a mark

Sudhakar Komakula was the man of the moment when Life of Beautiful hit theatres. The lad from Visakhapatnam earned acclaim for his Telangana accent in portraying the role of Nagaraju. His career, though, didn’t take off much thereafter; a spate of films didn’t go onto sets, an injury forced him to opt out of a few offers and a series of unfortunate choices followed. But the actor hasn’t given up; he is still determined to make a mark as he returns with Nuvvu Thopu Raa, which is set to release soon.

“Sustenance is important with films; acting isn’t a salaried job, so my wife has been a major support. I enjoy the filmmaking process. Had my acting debut not worked, I would have even worked in other departments, including ads and web series. I didn’t get a chance to showcase my talent after Life is Beautiful. I want to give it my best shot this time,” says the actor.

In Nuvvu Thopu Raa, he plays a demotivated guy who goes to the US owing to family circumstances. The film focuses on his transformation, he says, pointing towards the film’s tagline ‘Necessity is the mother’. “How he uses his grey shades to his advantages makes for an interesting journey. Bratakalante thodelula bratakali, indicating you need to be street smart to survive. The character is raised by a single mom and he realises her value only later.” Unlike many other Telugu films based on life in US, this film shows the darker side of student life, part-time jobs at gas stations and restaurants. “Life isn’t a bed of roses and dollars don’t come easy.”

Major portions of Nuvvu Thopu Raa have been shot at Utah state, not a popular choice with filmmakers.” It’s a secluded area, and that’s one reason the character feels lonely. There are a lot of mountains in the backdrop, they are a character of sorts and a witness to the guy’s loneliness. Though the film is set in US, the emotions are universal. There’s an underlying love story and it’s a commercial film with a realistic bent,” Sudhakar adds. His good friend James Kummu from Utah helped him with permissions, actors and locations.

This role too comes with a Telangana slang, he says: “I wanted to give another shot to the Telangana guy role, this part has more variations, ruggedness and intensity. Why not make the most use of the popularity of Nagaraju now? It’s a comeback film, I enjoyed the challenge of distinguishing it from the previous part. My other films have multiple protagonists, this is my first solo lead film.”

Harinath Babu directs Nuvvu Thopu Raa, while Ajju Mahakali has penned the script. “The director, despite being a debutant, handled the film with maturity. I hope to work on a web series soon. Only when you are familiar, you’ll get visibility you desire,” Sudhakar states. Nirosha makes a comeback with this film and Nitya Shetty plays his love interest.
