Babru is a Kannada film, shot entirely in USA and the film also premièred there on November 1 as part of the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations by the NRIs. The film, which stars Suman Nagarkar, is directed by Sujay Ramaiah. Babru is a thriller about two strangers with different motives; they are brought together by a common language and take off on an epic road trip across the States. The film is made by a team of “passionate” NRI Kannadigas, who took time off from their day jobs to make this film simply because of their “love for Kannada and cinema”.

Babru is produced by Suman Nagarkar Productions and Yuga Creations. The film is backed by none other than ‘rocking star’ Yash, who launched its trailer in Bengaluru recently. The filmis distributed by Kasturi Media and has Sandalwood Gelayara Balaga (SGB) as its promotion partner.

It was screened in San Francisco’s Bay Area and won accolades as the first Hollywood-Kannada Film. “Our goal was to do something nobody has ever done before. Many filmmakers come to the US to shoot a song or a small portion of their film. We decided to do an entire film in the USA. Earlier a few Kannada short films and documentaries were shot in America, but not a full-length feature film,” states Suman.

In fact, Babru is a comeback movie for Suman, who has etched an indelible impression in fans' hearts  with her performances in films like Beladingala Bale, Nishkarsha, Hoomale, Mungarina Minchu.

In Babru, she plays the lead role along with Mahi Hiremath. The film also features Sunny Moza, Rey Tostado, Prakruthi Kashyap, Gaana Bhat, Sandeep Belliyappa and Bharath Sripad.

Director Sujay Ramaiah makes his debut with this film. He wrote the story when “a sudden idea of strangers going on a cross-country journey popped up" when he was on a road trip with Rakshit Shetty during his visit. Babru has music by Poornachandra Tejaswi and sound design is by Aravind Menon.

What does ‘Babru’ mean? And Suman explains, “it is actually the name of the Volkswagen Beetle car, which plays an important character in this suspense thriller.” She also says that non-Kannadigas, American and Spanish artistes were also involved in the making of Babru. The film was launched in February 2018 and was shot on weekends and holidays. Sometimes, the crew took 10 days off from work to shoot.

According to the film’s executive producer, Gurudev Nagaraj, “The film shows parts of the United States, which were never seen in Kannada films earlier. It is an attempt to prove to Kannadiagas that Kannada speaking people living abroad can also make Kannada films. Another significant thing about Babru is using only A cappella music!"
