Veteran actor Anupam Kher is set to play Manmohan Singh in a movie based on the book “The Accidental Prime Minister,” written by the former Prime Minister’s media adviser Sanjaya Baru. T

he 62-year-old actor said he is essaying the role of Dr. Singh in the film to be directed by debutante Vijay Ratnakar Gutte.

National Award-winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta is working on the screenplay. “Yes, I am writing it,” Mehta said.

The book when it was released in 2014 kicked up quite a storm with the them Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying he felt “stabbed in the back” by his former media adviser Sanjaya Baru who allegedly used his access to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to write the book.

The book claims the Prime Minister was “defanged” by the Congress and its president, Sonia Gandhi, in the second term of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). In an official response, the PMO had accused Mr. Baru of misusing a privileged position for a commercial gain.

“It is an attempt to misuse a privileged position and access to high office to gain credibility to apparently exploit it for commercial gain. The commentary smacks of fiction and coloured views of a former adviser.”
