H ere is an opportunity for all aspiring short filmmakers to showcase their talent. Moviebuff has launched First Clap, a theatrical talent hunt, and invites short films of three-minute duration on any subject of interest. The top five short-listed films, selected based on feedback from industry experts and audience voting, will be screened for a period of five weeks across 150-plus screens in the Qube Cinema Network.

The contest is held in association with actor Suriya’s 2D Entertainment and also provides the winners an opportunity to intern with 2D Entertainment, in addition to a cash prize.

Jayendra Panchapakesan, co-founder of Real Image Media Technologies, which has started this initiative, says, “Through Moviebuff, we were serving the film industry by providing accurate information, accessible to everyone. First Clap is in continuation of this effort. We hope to connect talented filmmakers to the right producer. The short film they make could be their visiting card to enter the industry.” Not just that, Jayendra wanted to make the mainstream cinema audience view short films, and that is the reason he has decided to screen the top five winning entries on big screens. “This will be a platform of expression and it paves way for filmmakers to communicate their ideas and perspectives across to a larger audience.”

Suriya, who is always looking for high-calibre filmmakers for his 2D Entertainment, was fascinated by the idea and agreed to partner with the event. “This contest is an opportunity to tell an interesting story in three minutes – a challenge for any new talent or filmmaker who wants to make a mark, proving his/her expertise,” says Suriya.

“Good stories can be told in just three minutes and go on to garner the recognition and attention needed,” adds Jayendra.

Those interested can submit their entires until January 26, 2017, midnight. A panel of eminent jurists comprising of filmmakers and film enthusiasts will assist in shortlisting the films, which will be published online for public voting. On the basis of votes received from the general public, the top five films will be screened in over 150 screens in Qube Cinema Network theatres across Tamil Nadu.

The film that receives the highest number of votes will be declared the winner of the contest. The results will be announced in April 2017.
