How to watch Apple TV+ without switching to Apple

At ₹99 per month, Apple TV+ launches today worldwide. Turns out some competitors have your back...

Social media is abuzz with the new content from Apple TV+ which was announced at CEO Tim Cook’s September keynote at the Steve Jobs Theatre in California.

It’s a pretty deal at just ₹99 a month. Apple has stated that Apple TV+ will be available on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, Apple TV (3rd generation), iPod touch and Mac. To subscribe to Apple TV+, customers must update to iOS 12.3 or later, tvOS 12.3 or later and macOS Catalina. But you do get to start with a seven-day free trial.

Apple isn’t without its remarkable strategies, of course. At the keynote, Tim Cook also announced that customers who purchase any new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch starting September 10 can enjoy one year of Apple TV+ for free. Plus, beginning November 1, customers can initiate the one-year free offer in the Apple TV app on the device running the latest software.

Here’s the catch: customers have three months after device activation to claim the offer, or if the device was purchased and activated before the launch of Apple TV+, they will have three months starting November 1.

So, what are the alternatives?

The natural response one will have is to think ‘I’ll have to have an Apple device for that, won’t I?’ followed by a consideration to trade an organ in for such. Yes, yes, we know... Apple’s tight-knit ecosystem can be a bit of a pain but there’s a loophole and we’re more than happy to leap through it.

Apple has stated that Apple TV+ will also be available on the Apple TV app on select 2018, 2019 and newer Samsung smart TVs, and on Amazon Fire TV, LG, Roku, Sony and VIZIO platforms in the future. The keyword here is ‘select’, so don’t fret if your model isn’t saddled with the update.

The Sony rumour

The Internet has been churning with reports that some Sony Android TVs compatible with AirPlay 2 — most likely their Z9G Series (2019), A9G Series (2019), X950G Series (2019) and X850G Series (2019 85-inch, 75-inch, 65-inch and 55-inch models).

However, the October 29 2019 story on 9to5Mac.com — which broke the news — was recently updated, “Sony told us it was a mistake and they have no further news about the app launch for everyone, but it’s clearly coming in the near future since some people already got it.” So how did this realisation come about? Apparently a recent firmware update to some Sony TV models in Brazil was the tip-off.

But that does not necessarily mean you have to trade in your existing television for these pricey gadgets... unless you want to.

What about Amazon?

For quite a while, Apple and Amazon have been buddying up nicely. On October 10 2019, Amazon Music was loaded on to the Apple TV interface after the launch of Apple Music on Fire TV back in March. So on October 24, a press release from Amazon Fire TV stated that, from today, customers in over 60 countries can download the Apple TV app.

As an extra perk, the experience is also Alexa-enabled: users can use Alexa Voice Remote — included with every Fire TV or a paired Echo device — to easily start watching their favourite shows and movies or discover a new Apple Original from Apple TV+. All customers need to do is ask Alexa Voice remote to “find the Apple TV app” and then download and install the app. After installing the application users will just need to say “Alexa, watch Dickinson” or “Alexa, find dramas.” And don’t forget, Alexa is Hindi-compatible too.

The Apple TV app is already available for Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen) and Fire TV Stick 4K, in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and India.

Then there’s the browser experience...

The easiest, by far, is the browser-compatible option. Customers can subscribe to and watch Apple TV+ at https://tv.apple.com in Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Now, that’s pretty convenient.
