Kavya Viswanathan presents dialogue through dance

Kavya Viswanathan presents Black Lotus, a combination of interpretative dance, music and text this weekend

Belly dancer Kavya Viswanathan has always been passionate about this dance form. Her passion to discover other movement vocabularies, led to her learning yoga, ballet, jazz and contemporary dance too. She will be presenting her work titled Black Lotus this weekend, which will, “incorporate elements of all the forms I have learnt,” says Kavya.

Black Lotus, explains Kavya, will be a combination of interpretative dance, music and text. “This comes from authentic movement and borrows from theatre as well,” explains the dancer, who has also directed it. The dance will be presented by students of Martiya Dance Community, founded by Kavya in 2012.

“The production is all about using stories from our everyday lives, that we don’t have the time to stop and think about. The dance is an attempt to reflect on the mundane; on ordinary thoughts that make extraordinary changes for our being,” she explains.

Kavya also adds that she is passionate about teaching. “However, we do not own a place. Instead, we rent out places across the city and conduct classes and workshops. We also organise regular workshops every Sunday.”

Kavya believes her heart lies in belly dancing. “You will get to see a little bit of this too in Black Lotus. There is not much information about this dance form even today. So I studied it in detail on the internet; I am self taught. This dance form goes far deeper than what meets the eye. It is a celebration of the body and helps one connect with even the intimate parts of your body in a manner that no other dance form does.”

Black Lotus will be presented at Shoonya on July 5 and 6 at 7.30 pm; at Lahe Lahe on July 12 and at Vyoma Art Space & Studio on July 13. Tickets available on bookmyshow
