A date with creativity

Over 300 hand-painted calendars are displayed at an exhibition at Andhra University

The otherwise quiet Department of Fine Arts of Andhra University is all abuzz. Huge hoardings are being readied to be put up for a fine arts exhibition. On exhibit are over 300 hand-painted calendars by the Arts students. They carry artwork that include portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose and impressions of famous landmark places in and around the city such as Simhachalam, Dr BR Ambedkar College of Law, Physics Department of Andhra University and Scandal Point.

Besides calendars are also sculpted terracotta toys, colourful masks, lamps and installations the students have artistically positioned at the venue. The exhibition was inaugurated on December 20.

“Over 70 students from across the courses in the college have worked for almost 15 days on these paintings and crafts. The money collected from the sale of these creations will be used for the renovation and welfare of the department,” says Ravi Kattakuri, a faculty member . He adds that the department plans to make this exhibition an annual event. Catering to the festive season the students have also made hand-painted greeting cards with messages for Christmas and New Year. Cotton bags with paintings on them are also a part of the exhibition.
