Transgender to contest against Mamata

LJP to field two transgenders in West Bengal Assembly polls

March 25, 2016 11:58 pm | Updated September 06, 2016 03:05 pm IST - Kolkata:

Two transgenders have announced that they will contest the West Bengal Assembly elections with one challenging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhawanipore Assembly segment.

Lok Janshakti Party’s vice-president Ram Chandra Paswan on Friday announced that Bobby Halder, 39, a transgender, would contest on the party ticket from Bhawanipore.

This makes Bhawanipore — where former Union Minister Deepa Dasmunsi is the combined candidate of the Left Front-Congress alliance and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose is the BJP candidate — most colourful in terms of candidates.

Speaking to The Hindu , Bobby Halder said the Constitution had given every citizen the right to contest polls. “Over the years, so many parties came but none gave us ticket. I am happy.”
