West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday suffered injuries to her left leg while campaigning in Nandigram and was rushed to Kolkata for treatment.

A visibly distressed Ms. Banerjee alleged that she was greeting people when four or five people surrounded and pushed her.

“There were no local police personnel. Even the Superintendent of Police was not there.. There is lot of swelling .. I am in pain and have to return to Kolkata,” Ms. Banerjee told journalists. Asked whether there was some conspiracy Ms Banerjee, said, “It is a conspiracy. They did it purposely.”

The Chief Minister was brought to the State-run SSKM Hospital and taken inside on a stretcher.

She was returning from a religious event in Nandigram to her temporary residence in Reyapara and stepped out of her vehicle to greet people, when the incident occurred.

Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Trinamool Congress MP who was in Nandigram with Ms. Banerjee said the incident occurred at Birulia Anchal in Nandigram.

“At about 6.15 p.m., when she was about to leave Birulia Anchal after performing puja in a temple, a few unknown persons pushed her to the car and forcibly shut down the door, as a result of which she sustained injuries in her left leg and also suffered severe pain in the waist,” the TMC MP said.

Ms. Banerjee has been staying in Nandigram for the past two days. Earlier in the day, the TMC chief filed her nomination papers at Haldia Sub Divisional Office to contest from Nandigram.

The Trinamool Congress leadership condemned the development and called it “most unfortunate”.

Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee and other members of her family were present at the hospital while a large number of Trinamool Congress supporters had gathered outside the hospital. Slogans against the BJP were raised at the hospital. West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar also reached the hospital and was greeted by “go back” slogans by the TMC supporters.

While a section of the BJP leadership wished a speedy recovery to the Chief Minister, other leaders also alleged that Ms. Banerjee was trying to “gain sympathy” over the accident.

“There should be a high-level inquiry and her allegations should be proved. She is Z category protectee and it should be proved by why security personnel were not with her,” State's BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said.

BJP leaders like Kailash Vijyavargiya and Arjun Singh and State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury alleged that Ms Banerjee was trying to “gain sympathy” over the incident.

Leaders of several political parties like Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashvi Yadav, Samajwadi party leader Akhikesh Yadav and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kerjriwal also raised the issue of injury on West Bengal Chief Minister.
