On the last day of campaigning in Tripura on Friday, Congress President Rahul Gandhi called upon people to vote for his party, which was committed to working for the progress of the State.

Speaking at a rally in Kailashahar, the constituency of Pradesh Congress Committee chief Birajit Sinha, Mr. Gandhi sought people’s support for his party in the February 18 polls to bring in good governance.

Slams PM

He slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making false promises. “He [Mr. Modi] came and gave a couple of promises, but he has a tendency to forget them after the poll,” said Mr. Gandhi. He came down heavily on the Prime Minister for favouring his ‘friend’ in the Rafale jet purchase deal.

Security has been beefed up to ensure free and fair elections to the 60-member Assembly, said Director-General of Police Akhil Kumar Shukla.

He warned of action against trouble mongers. Even police officers would not be spared if they were found violating the model code of conduct, he said.

“The BSF has sealed the border; it has increased vigil along the Assam-Tripura and Tripura-Mizoram boundaries. CCTV cameras have been installed and Central security forces have been deployed,” Mr. Shukla said.

A toll-free number 15103 had been launched to receive information and complaints from the public, he said.

After the campaigning ended at 4 p.m., security forces launched a search in lodges and hotels to track outsiders in compliance with the Election Commission order.
