May 20, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 12, 2016 07:26 pm IST - CHENNAI:

For the first time in its political history, the Communist parties will not have a single representative in the Assembly.

Even when the AIADMK, riding on a sympathy wave following the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, crushed the entire Opposition in 1991, the CPI and CPI (M) managed to win one seat each. It was between 1952 and 1957 that the undivided CPI sent 63 members to the Assembly of the Madras Presidency.

“In 1971, we were not able to win a seat. Irrespective of electoral outcomes, we will continue to work for the welfare of people,” said CPI (M) State secretary G. Ramakrishnan.
