Jayalalithaa likely to meet Governor on Saturday

AIADMK general secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was elected leader of the legislature party at a meeting of MLAs here on Friday.

She is likely to meet Governor K. Rosaiah on Saturday to stake her claim to form the government. The swearing-in ceremony will most likely be held on Monday. There was no official confirmation of the schedule.

The newly-elected MLAs, including actor Karunas of the Mukkulathor Pulipadai, Thameemun Ansari of Manithaneya Jananayaka Katchi and U. Thaniyarasu of the Kongu Youth Forum, who contested on the Two-Leaves symbol, also participated in the election process, which was unanimous. The letter, attested by 133 MLAs, was later handed over to the party chief by senior party leaders.

Interestingly, one of the MLAs, S.M. Seenivel of Thiruparankundram, who was in hospital, also sent a letter of support. The party headquarters saw large crowds of supporters. Earlier in the day, Ms. Jayalalithaa paid floral tributes to portraits of Periyar, MGR and Anna placed near their statues.

‘Campaign of lies’

In the morning, the Chief Minister, in a statement, said that she would express her gratitude in action to the people of Tamil Nadu by working with renewed vigour. “The election results have proved that I am constantly with the people and they are forever with me,” she said.

Criticising the DMK for its “campaign of lies”, she said, “Trumped-up charges were unleashed by them against the AIADMK... However, the people have, through this mandate, proved that they cannot be deceived by such ways.”
