The Congress was allotted 41 seats in the DMK alliance and AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, who signed the agreement on behalf of his party, expressed the hope that the DMK would be able to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

"I have seen that since the past few decades the AIADMK has never been able to get two consecutive terms. In Tamil Nadu, it is always one term for AIADMK and another term for the DMK. Now it is the turn of the DMK-led government and I am sure we will be able to form the government. We will work sincerely to ensure we are victorious," said Mr. Azad at the Gopalapuram residence of DMK leader M. Karunanidhi.

It is a comedown for the Congress that was allotted 63 seats in the 2011 Assembly polls. But it is not able to bargain for more as the faction led by former Union Minister G.K. Vasan has left the party to form TMC.

Mr. Azad said a major share will go to the DMK and the party had tied up with a number of parties.

DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin said talks to identify seats would begin on Monday evening and both the parties had formed a committee for the purpose.

"We have the confidence the alliance formed by the DMK will be able to remove the AIADMK government from power,” he said.
